Legacy software modernisation for warehouse operations

I’ve overhauled warehouse management system (WMS) software and updated older systems on site in high-volume warehouses. If your team is correcting the same records or keeping a separate file to get through a shift, I can help you work out which part of the software needs attention.

Updating older WMS software

Start with one task that adds work. If staff re-enter a quantity after goods arrive, I want to see what they receive, where they record it and what the next person needs. A workaround may be preserving an important business rule that the software no longer makes obvious.

I look at which parts still serve the team, who maintains them and what changes the supplier allows. A configuration change may be enough. For WMS customisation, I would check which extensions the supplier supports and who has permission to alter the code. Selective replacement is an option if access or the structure of the existing software limits what can be changed.

Operational data analysis for WMS optimisation

Suppose stock adjustments arrive late. An agreed sample of source records and receiving timestamps can show where the delay starts. I check what each timestamp means, whether records are missing or duplicated, and how the people on shift describe the same events.

Before changing an import or its schedule, agree a baseline such as the delay between recording and accepting an adjustment. Compare the same measure afterwards, allowing for different volumes and shift patterns. That gives the team a reason to keep the change, adjust it or investigate somewhere else.

Integrating legacy software with newer applications

If the existing system records stock correctly but another application needs the same figures, an integration may address the handover. An application programming interface (API) or a supported file exchange can be assessed against the information that needs to move.

If neither system records an important decision, a small internal application may give the team a place to make it while the WMS continues to manage stock.

Testing and transition planning

A change to a stock rule may affect reports, interfaces and the next shift. We need to agree which records and exceptions to test, who can accept the result, when the change can go live and how to recover if it fails. Where documentation is incomplete, tracing a representative transaction with the team helps identify dependencies.

The access needed for testing, the supplier’s involvement and responsibility for support all affect the scope. Those decisions belong in the plan before work on the live system begins.

Updating stock software across Lincolnshire and the East of England

From my base in Sleaford I can help food processors, warehouses and distributors across Lincolnshire and the East of England. A cold-store operator around Grantham or Easton, for example, may need a stock record to remain consistent between storage and despatch.

Approved documentation, demonstrations and code review can suit remote work across the UK. If a shift handover is hard to interpret from the records, we can discuss a site visit.

Discuss your existing warehouse software

Tell me what the software does today, where your team has to work around it and which task you would like to improve.
