Spreadsheet automation and optimisation for stock operations
If a stock report starts with the same export, column changes and checks every week, tell me how you prepare it. I look at the work around the spreadsheet as well as the file itself. Sometimes a change to the export removes the most awkward step.

Suppose a warehouse exports its closing stock each Friday. Someone then matches item codes against a second list and investigates the rows left over. The repeatable part may be preparing the match and flagging exceptions, while a person still needs to decide what an unfamiliar code means.
Before choosing what to automate, establish how often the report runs, which steps consume time and who uses the final figures. Agree what would count as an improvement and what still needs a human check.
Preparing stock imports and exports
An import may require a particular column order, date format or item reference. I look at how the source file is produced, what changes between exports and how the receiving system reports a rejected row.
Keeping a reference to each original row makes it easier to trace a mismatch. If a supplier changes the file structure, it should be clear which checks need revisiting before anyone relies on the next report.
Checking workbook data and rules
A blank quantity, a zero balance and a missing product are different cases. The person using the figures can help define what each one means. I would check the calculation against agreed examples, including duplicates, corrections and an item that appears for the first time.
An approved sample with fictional or anonymised records is a useful starting point for a review. Describe the task in your enquiry. We can agree how to share any files separately.
When a shared application is more suitable
A workbook can remain a good choice where one person owns the report and the rules are clear. If several shifts need to edit the same records, different colleagues need different access, or an approval must be traceable, a small internal application may fit the task better.
Another common difficulty is copying records from one application into another before the workbook can even be used. In that case it is worth looking at the handover between the systems.
Spreadsheet work in Lincolnshire and across the UK
From Sleaford I offer spreadsheet development across Lincolnshire and the East of England. A review can often be done remotely across the UK if we can see the preparation steps, agree a safe set of examples and check the output with the people who depend on it.
