Bespoke stock and processing software
I build internal software for stock and processing tasks. If your stock system records the movement of goods but the team still manages a decision in email or a shared file, a focused application may be enough to cover that gap.

Suppose someone has to review a stock discrepancy before an order can proceed. Who records it, who can resolve it, and how will the warehouse know it can release the order? Those decisions define what an internal tool would need to record.
If a shared spreadsheet already does the job, it helps to understand where it falls short. The case for an application becomes clearer when different users need different permissions, two people can change the same record, or a decision needs a reliable history.
What belongs in the first version
Choose one task that matters to the team. Follow it from the first entry to the point someone acts on the result. Identify the people involved, the records they need, the decisions they make and the exceptions that would stop them using the tool.
That gives you a first version you can judge against a real task. Extra reports or a second department’s workflow can then have a separate scope. Where the issue is mainly preparing a recurring file, improving the spreadsheet may already cover it.
Connecting bespoke software to existing systems
Your stock system may need to remain the owner of item codes and quantities while the new application records an approval or an exception. Agree which information each system can change and what should happen when a record is corrected.
Whether the applications can exchange that information depends on the interfaces and access available. If the difficulty is already part of the existing stock system, it may make more sense to extend that software first.
TabulaWMS private beta
I also develop TabulaWMS, warehouse management software currently in private beta. If you’re commissioning bespoke software, the starting point is your team’s task, the tools it already uses and the records it needs to keep.
Code ownership and handover
Before development, agree who owns the commissioned code, the terms of any third-party components and who controls access to the hosting and source files. Decide what documentation another developer would need to run and maintain the application.
Responsibility for updates, support and absence cover also needs to be agreed. The handover can then be checked against a list of specific records, access and instructions.
Scoping a stock or processing tool
I’m based in Sleaford and work across Lincolnshire and the East of England. For a manufacturer around Lincoln, a useful starting brief might be how components are approved for release when the stock system records only their location and quantity.
For projects elsewhere in the UK, scoping and development can work remotely where we can review authorised examples and test the result with the people who will use it.
Describe the internal tool your team needs
